Voodoo Fuel - a mixture of healthy fats, cacao, cinnamon, salt and collagen powder that can be added to coffee make a delicious, energizing, satiating drink.
So named because when first asked how/why it makes one feel so good, I responded that it must be the “Voodoo Yogini Magic” that I had infused into my homemade ghee.
Voodoo Fuel, like most “inventions”, came about from necessity. Carrying the various ingredients around for “Fat Coffee” in my bag was becoming quite the nuisance, so I set it upon myself to find a solution. Hence, Voodoo Fuel was born. At first, it was simply a mixture of coconut oil, homemade ghee, cinnamon and salt whipped together and spooned into a glass Mason jar. However, the jar was heavy, so I knew I had to improve upon the idea.
It was around this time that I started adding grass-fed hydrolyzed collagen powder and ultra dark chocolate to my coffee, so I wanted to add those to the recipe too.
Collagen is the most copious protein in the body and is found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, tendons and the digestive system. It is used to replace dead skin cells and is what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, preventing sagging and wrinkles. It’s used in joints, tendons and connective tissues to keep them strong, supple and mobile. Collagen really is like the “glue” that helps hold the body together.
The body slows collagen production as we age, but we can also lose collagen due to hormonal changes, drug and alcohol consumption, a SAD diet containing processed foods, refined sugar and hydrogenated fats, stress, too much sun and not enough water. Even drinking fluoridated water affects collagen production! This is why it’s a great idea to supplement.
In hydrolyzed collagen supplements, the usable small chain peptides and amino acids are ready to go — your body just has to put them to work.
Hydrolyzed collagen contains 20 amino acids, including 8 out of the 9 essential amino acids.
The only essential amino acid missing from hydrolyzed collagen powder is tryptophan.
However, since raw cacao contains plenty of tryptophan, Voodoo Fuel made with raw dark chocolate and collagen contains all 9 essential amino acids!!
Cacao butter and raw 80% -100% cacao chocolate are both completely solid at room temperature, so by adding them to the recipe and then pouring them into molds, an easy-to-carry version of Voodoo Fuel was born. I first used a silicon cube-shaped ice tray as the mold, so I named them Voodoo Cubes.
When I started making them for clients, I had to find a way to be able to mold hundreds at a time, so I transitioned to pouring them into foil-lined mini muffin cups. Although they aren’t cube-shaped anymore, the name Voodoo Cubes stuck.
You can buy 48-well mini muffin pans at most kitchen supply stores. Each mini muffin “cup” holds about 1/4 cup of Voodoo Fuel - just the right amount for a small coffee or chai tea. However, if you don’t have a mini muffin pan, just regular old ice cube trays(plastic or silicon) will work just fine.
160g raw cacao butter, chopped
160g raw 80% - 100% cacao chocolate, chopped
320g organic (preferably grass-fed) ghee
320g organic virgin coconut oil
4 Tbsp Cylon cinnamon
2 tsp fine Himalayan sea salt
2 Tbsp organic Vanilla Powder
3 cups hydrolyzed grass-fed collagen powder
Line 48 mini muffin cups with liners (foil liners work best).
Combine all ingredients except collagen powder in a medium saucepan.
Set over low heat and stir until all is melted together. DO NOT BOIL!!!
Remove from heat.
Add collagen powder now and stir well with a whisk to distribute evenly.
Carefully fill each muffin cup, stirring the mixture as you work, to ensure that the cinnamon and collagen stay suspended and get evenly distributed between all the cups.
Place pan into fridge or freezer to allow Voodoo Fuel to harden.
Store in the fridge or freezer.
